📖 What Are Generational Curses?
A generational curse refers to patterns of sin, behavior, or consequences that appear to pass down through a family line. It is the result of disobedience or rebellion against God that affects generations. In simple terms, it is the spiritual consequence of sin being repeated or inherited through a family unless broken through repentance in Christ.
This is a highly contested topic. There are scriptures that support this concept, while there are also scriptures that are often misunderstood as opposing it. The truth, however, remains the same. In Deuteronomy 5:9–10, the Bible says:
“You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
🙏 My Personal Journey: From Witchcraft to Christ
In my personal journey to self-deliverance, I mentioned that I grew up in a family that heavily practices witchcraft. My grandfather did the same, and those dark traditions influenced our home deeply.
When I gave my life to Christ, everything changed. I was on fire for Jesus and chose to serve Him faithfully in church. I gave up all my past habits and desired only to glorify Him. The peace I received was undeniable; it was clear I had made the right decision.
If you grew up in a Christian family, you may not easily recognize this contrast between darkness and light. For me, it was night and day. All I wanted was to dwell in the presence of God.
🌪️ Struggles That Would Not Go Away
Amid the peace and joy, I began to notice certain patterns in my life, struggles that seemed unique to many members of my family. Suddenly, I found myself battling in every area. Even simple things that once came easily became difficult.
In this period, I slept in church, not because I wanted to, but because I could not afford rent. When I did manage to pay it, often through someone’s help, I could not afford transport to church. I tried searching for work, and I was even willing to wash cars or work in a restaurant, but these places rejected me.
I resorted to fully serving God, praying, and fasting. I saw others come to church and experience quick transformation while I continued to struggle. I read the Bible daily and believed deeply that Christ had redeemed me from the curse of the law, so I kept prayerfully waiting for my miracle. But the bible clearly states “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3)
🌙 The Dream That Opened My Eyes
One day, weary from constant struggles, I went to a prayer mountain for three days. On the second day, I ran out of words, so I was convicted to pray in tongues for the rest of my stay. On the third day, I had a dream that felt completely real.
In the dream, I saw a very dirty old woman, it felt like she was around 300 years old – dressed in animal skin, with very long, dirty dreadlocks. She radiated strong evil power and resembled my father’s mother. Yet as I prayed in tongues, she could not approach me.
At that time, being a new Christian, at least I knew there was power in praying in tongues, but I did not understand what the dream meant. Everyone I told had their own interpretation. It was only after I relocated to another country and began deliverance prayers, renouncing and denouncing ancestral practices – that I saw the same spirit again.
This time, from what it said, I understood it represented my great-grandmother. When I later spoke to an elderly relative about our family lineage, a process called spiritual mapping — he was shocked by how accurately I described her.
From that day, I never doubted the existence of ancestral curses and covenants. The revelation brought understanding, and the process of deliverance began.
💧 Revelation Brings Deliverance
As I began to repent, renounce, and denounce the ancestral practices tied to my family, besides the joy and peace, the quality of my life began to improve. Deliverance did not come instantly but gradually, as I applied spiritual laws and took authority in the name of Jesus.
I learned that though Christ has already paid the price, we must declare that victory by addressing the roots of inherited bondage through prayer, repentance, and revelation. Off course some believers haven’t experienced this, and all I can say, be thankful to God.
👩🍼 A Sister’s Testimony of Breaking Barrenness
A sister in Christ allowed me to share her testimony. She suffered ten years of barrenness after marriage. For all those years, she believed that since she had given her life to Christ and had faith, she simply had to pray and wait for God to open her womb.
One day, during her grandmother’s funeral, a casual conversation revealed something shocking. A relative mentioned that their deceased grandmother had experienced multiple miscarriages and had once performed a fertility ritual involving a sacrifice, dancing naked, and speaking obscenities all night to conceive. It was through this covenant that her mother and aunts were born.
That revelation marked the beginning of her deliverance. She prayed, repented, and broke every ancestral covenant attached to fertility rituals. In the eleventh year, she conceived and gave birth to her first child.
Though science had its explanations, she understood that true deliverance came when she applied the right spiritual principles — knowing that Christ had already died for her sins.
🔑 How to Break Free from Generational Curses
If you cannot access your family’s spiritual history, ask God to reveal it to you, He is faithful. When He does, repent on behalf of your family, renounce and denounce any ungodly practices, and ask for mercy.
Here are key steps to walk in freedom:

🙏 Stand on Scripture and the finished work of Christ.
